The sensor is mounted at the tail rope. When the drill pipe is screwed on, it generates a pull force at the tail rope, which is proportional to the screw-on torque. The pull force works on the hydraulic oil via the piston in the sensor, and then be transmitted to the bourdon tube of tong torque gauge via hydraulic hose, and the free end of the tube thus begins to move, which in turn drives the pointer to deflect by an amplifying movement to indicate the pull force on the tail rope.
